Five years of unity in rhythm. Five years combining the grooviest of music live and the selections of the vinyl crate digging artists.

In June 2007, General Eclectic, Samba Elégua and Maracatu Nunca Antes joined up to present a show and party together. Five years later, Uma Nota maintains everything that makes it a steaming and ecstatic function, but it’s become more: it’s a reference point for music and culture from sunny climes, and a place that lets locals and artists come together and dance to the polyrhythmic tropical vibe in the most unpretentious and fun way.

For our fifth anniversary, we present the Uma Nota debut of Quique Escamilla, a multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter and kind of an underground phenomenon from Chiapas, Mexico. Escamilla recently opened for Michael Franti and Spearhead at Luminato 6. Escamilla and his band fuse traditional Mexican styles of music such as ranchera and huapango with modern sounds of rock, reggae, ska, pop, jazz, cumbia, bolero, and a variety of other Latin American rhythms. Escamilla’s lyrics carry powerful messages around various social and political issues such as human and civil rights, immigration reform, global conservation, anti-oppression and indigenous rights. He has has been featured frequently on CBC Radio One Toronto and his self-titled album was recorded and presented in 2012 by CBC Radio’s Canada Live. “QuiQue crosses all the bridges.”

Also in the mix: the return of Batucada Carioca, directed by sambista Maninho Costa of Rio de Janeiro. Fueling the frenzy-inducing stage show are strings and vocals atop the heavy percussive swing of the Batucada Carioca bateria. Costa, who divides his time between Rio and Toronto, has recorded as a soloist with Sergio Mendes, and is an in-demand player in Rio, who has performed in the best of the best of that city’s famous samba school drum corps.

DJ eLman, our featured guest selector, is one of the hosts of Dos Mundos Radio on CIUT, as well as the Funkete and Funk vs. Kuduro event series; he’s Toronto’s most tireless purveyor of tropical bass, making us move that thing with Angolan kuduro, baile funk, cumbia electronica and other goodies from his explorations in Colombia.

Resident DJ and visuals whiz General Eclectic will drop a special 5!-year set with killer Afrobeat, MPB, rare grooves and Latin-Caribbean flavours, alongside a customized visual environment, with slideshows, graphic art and more. This is the only performer who can claim he has performed at every Uma Nota since it started!

Bring your finest dancefloor appreciator amigos and your most fun, positive-energy peeps — no spectators!
