Uma Nota Culture, Showzaço and Lulaworld proudly present three incredible Brazilian singer-songwriters gracing the same stage at Lula Lounge.
Josyara is a Brazilian guitarist and singer-songwriter who carries on her country’s tradition of combining infectious rhythms with an indulgent laid-back vibe. Despite her first album coming out over a decade ago, Josyara is relatively young, bringing a unique blend of youthful spirit and professional experience to her well-crafted songs. You don’t have to share a language with her to find meaning in her songs, which tend to lean into the realm of politics and social observation. The lilt and emotiveness of her voice transcend mere words, the percussiveness of her guitar punctuates the lyrics, and the references to Brazilian bossa nova (Josyara hails from Juazeiro, which was also the home of João Gilberto) and Tropicalia lend a warm familiarity.
Singer, songwriter, anti-racist activist and fierce defendant of the LGBTI+ community worldwide, Bia Ferreira defines her music as MMP: Música de Mulher Preta (Black Woman Music). She broke into public consciousness in 2017 with the track, Cota Não é Esmola, about the importance of the quota system for the access of the black population to the university. In addition to the 13 million views on YouTube and several million Spotify plays, the song became mandatory reading for the University of Brasília entrance exam. She was nominated for the 2018 Women in Music Awards, and on her 2019 album, Igreja Lesbiteriana: Um Chamado, (Lesbitarian Church: A Calling), the messages are harnessed to a carriage of funky beats, reggae and soul ballad grooves. This year she played major stages in Portugal including a memorable performance at LMM Sines.
“Acrobatic, sensual, both angelic and profane” is how The Guardian described the voice of brazilian-born, canadian singer-songwriter Bruno Capinan. The Toronto based artist has released six albums in his twelve-year long career, and performed to audiences in Portugal, Canada, Japan, South America, Africa and the United States; fusing bossa-nova inspired music and an extravagant performance.
